Bennett Harris

  • Stewart House Hotel 2 North Water Street Athens, NY, 12015 United States (map)

Get ready for a show of rousing, funky and rollicking country blues music when Bennett Harris takes thestage. He’s singing and fingerpicking up a storm of Delta/ragtime guitar blues, and blowing a mean harmonica to boot! Bennett Harris began playing guitar as a teenager in NYC, where he absorbed a diversity of musical influences. As an adult, he has intensively focused his energy and attention on the pre-WWII traditional country blues genre, listening closely to classic artists such as Blind Blake, Son House, Robert Johnson...as well as contemporary revivalists including Jorma Kaukonen and John Hammond. Bennett learned ragtime fingerpicking technique in 1978, studying under Rev. Gary Davis disciple Ian Buchanan (who was Jorma Kaukonen’s guitar tutor as well). Bennett was inspired to learn slide guitar and harmonica after seeing John Hammond perform. A beautiful 1934 National steel Duolian guitar is a mainstay in the shows. Its whining tone and nasty growl makes the National  a perfect vehicle for the emotional Delta blues “bottleneck” slide playing. Bennett’s repertoire is ever-expanding, including songs of Bessie Smith, Skip James, Blind Boy Fuller, and originals. He’s an exciting showman, and aims to provide a memorable time for everyone within listening range!
